Recently, for the first time in my short driving career, I have had to do a long car journey on my own.

After passing my driving test, I mainly just took my car to work – about 15 minutes drive away – or to the shops, and I usually had someone with me.

Although it was great to be able to get to where I wanted to go without having to stand in the rain waiting for the bus, and to be part of the car-sharing scheme at work, I had never really felt that I was using my car to its full potential.

Volkswagen is recalling as many as 168,275 Golf, Jetta and Audi vehicles with diesel engines because of fuel system defect that could lead to fires, federal safety officials say.

The recall, which is expected to start in November, applies to certain 2009-2012 Jetta and Jetta Sportwagen and 2010-2012 Golf and Audi A3 vehicles, according to an announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Safety and insurance industry officials advise consumers to take advantage of vehicle recalls in order to have potential safety problems fixed.

Although motorists would likely not be found financially liable for damages from an accident that is proven to have been caused by a defective automotive part, those drivers could be left struggling with questions about auto insurance coverage at a time when they are trying to recover from an accident.

Officials with the federal agency’s Office of Defect Investigations (ODI) say that a fuel injector line could develop small cracks that could cause fuel to leak, which could lead to a fire if it happens around an ignition source.
